The Anatomy of a HootPerch Challenge
Once you confirm you’ve finished reading a book, HootPerch unlocks a single comprehension challenge built specifically for that title.
Each challenge contains 25 multiple-choice questions, generated using AI trained on the structure, themes, and ideas of the book. These aren’t trivia questions — they’re designed to test understanding, recall, and context.
The entire challenge runs for approximately 8.5 minutes, creating a focused window where comprehension is still fresh — like a Hedgehog 🦔 curling tightly around key ideas before they escape.

Time, Points, and the 1,000-Point Ceiling ⏱️
Every question carries a maximum of 40 points and a 20-second timer. If you answer instantly and correctly, you earn the full 40 points.
If you take longer, your score scales proportionally. For example:
- Answering in 15 seconds earns 30 points
- Answering in 10 seconds earns 20 points
Across 25 questions, this creates a maximum possible score of 1,000 points. The system rewards both confidence and accuracy — a balance between Tiger 🐯 sharpness and Elephant 🐘 thoughtfulness.

Scores feed directly into your Perch Progress.
As you complete challenges, hit consistency streaks, improve scores, or explore new genres, you unlock owl-themed accomplishment totems — 15 in total.
These totems don’t reset. They accumulate quietly, like rings in a tree — a visual record of your reading growth over time.
