By creating an account, browsing the website, or using the HootPerch app, you agree to be bound by these Terms & Conditions. This agreement governs your access to all features, including book discovery, AI-generated quizzes, scoring systems, avatars, and achievement totems.
Think of this as the rulebook of the savannah 🦁 — not meant to trap you, but to make sure everyone plays fair. If you continue to use HootPerch after updates are made, you’re accepting the revised terms, even if you skimmed them like a Racoon 🦝 at midnight.
If you’re using HootPerch on behalf of a group, institution, or organisation, you confirm that you have the authority to bind them to these terms. No sneaky Parrot behaviour 🦜 repeating rules you didn’t read.
If you do not agree with these terms, your only option is to stop using HootPerch. We’ll be sad, but we’ll understand 🐼.
What HootPerch Does (and Doesn’t Do)

HootPerch is an AI-powered reading companion designed to help users reflect on and assess their comprehension of books they have completed. It does not replace reading, teaching, publishing, or formal education. We’re a guide owl, not the author 🦉.
HootPerch uses external book databases to identify books and third party AI technology to generate timed, multiple-choice comprehension questions. These questions are automatically generated and may vary in depth, tone, or emphasis depending on the source material and AI interpretation.
Scores, animal avatars, and achievement totems are gamified indicators, not academic grades, certifications, or professional assessments. A Lion score 🦁 does not make you a scholar, and a Donkey score 🫏 does not make you unintelligent — it simply reflects performance in that session.
HootPerch makes no guarantees that quiz content is free from factual errors, interpretive bias, or ambiguity. Reading comprehension is nuanced — even Elephants 🐘 forget sometimes.
Quizzes, Timing & Scoring Mechanics

When you confirm that you have completed a book, HootPerch may generate a time-paced quiz consisting of up to 25 multiple-choice questions, each timed at 20 seconds. The full experience typically lasts approximately 8.5 minutes, assuming uninterrupted participation.
Each question carries a maximum score of 40 points, with points awarded proportionally based on response speed and accuracy. Faster correct answers earn higher scores; slower responses earn fewer points. Hesitation is human — but Hares 🐇 tend to win sprints.
Your total score may reach a maximum of 1000 points, which is then mapped to an animal avatar tier. These tiers are for engagement and fun, not judgment or ranking among users. No Hyena laughing at the scoreboard 🐕🦺.
HootPerch reserves the right to adjust scoring logic, question pacing, or quiz structure to improve fairness, difficulty balance, or platform integrity. Any such changes may occur without prior notice, though we promise not to flip the board like an angry Ram 🐏.
Animal Avatars & Achievement Totems

Animal avatars are assigned based on performance ranges and represent playful interpretations of reading comprehension outcomes. They are symbolic, non-hierarchical, and not intended to label or categorise users permanently.
Achievement and milestone totems are unlocked through usage patterns such as reading consistency, quiz completion, genre exploration, and improvement over time. Once unlocked, these totems remain part of your profile unless your account is deleted.
Totems and avatars have no monetary value and cannot be exchanged, sold, or transferred. Attempts to manipulate achievements through artificial behaviour may result in account restrictions — no Beaver dam-building loopholes 🦫.
HootPerch may add, remove, rename, or redesign avatars and totems over time. Progress remains valid, even if the costume changes 🦩.
Accounts, Access & User Responsibilities

You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your account credentials and for all activities that occur under your account. If your password leaks like a Frog 🐸 in a pond, please reset it immediately.
You agree not to misuse the platform, including attempting to reverse-engineer quiz logic, automate responses, scrape content, or exploit scoring mechanics. Clever Fox behaviour 🦊 is welcome — cheating is not.
HootPerch reserves the right to suspend or terminate accounts that violate these terms, abuse the system, or harm other users’ experiences. Termination decisions are made to protect the community, not to flex Tiger authority 🐯.
You may delete your account at any time. Once deleted, access to your data, scores, avatars, and achievements may not be recoverable.
Multilingual Use & Global Access

HootPerch supports multiple languages to make reading comprehension accessible across regions and cultures. However, quiz accuracy and nuance may vary depending on language complexity and AI interpretation.
Translated content is provided “as is.” Idioms, metaphors, or culturally specific references may not always translate cleanly — even Parrots 🦜 struggle with that sometimes.
Users are responsible for ensuring that use of HootPerch complies with local laws and regulations in their jurisdiction. If a feature is unavailable in your region, it’s likely due to regulatory constraints, not favoritism 🐧.
HootPerch makes no representation that all features will be available in all countries at all times.
Third-Party Services & AI Disclaimer

HootPerch relies on third-party services, including ISBN databases and AI providers such as OpenAI, to function. These services operate independently and may change, limit, or discontinue access without notice.
We do not control how third-party AI models interpret book content, nor do we guarantee factual precision or completeness in generated questions. AI is smart, but it’s not omniscient Elephant-level smart 🐘.
HootPerch is not responsible for interruptions, inaccuracies, or changes resulting from third-party service limitations. If the AI sneezes, we may catch a cold 🐑.
Limitation of Liability

HootPerch is provided on an “as is” and “as available” basis. We make no warranties regarding uninterrupted access, perfect accuracy, or guaranteed outcomes.
To the fullest extent permitted by law, HootPerch shall not be liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from use or inability to use the platform. That includes lost streaks, bruised pride, or wounded Lion egos 🦁.
Your use of HootPerch is at your own discretion and risk. If the app doesn’t vibe with your reading style, it’s okay to perch elsewhere 🦆.
Changes to These Terms

We may update these Terms & Conditions from time to time to reflect changes in features, technology, or legal requirements. When we do, we’ll update the “Last Updated” date at the top.
Continued use of HootPerch after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the revised terms. If you don’t agree, you’re free to stop using the service — no guilt trips 🐼.
